Minneapolis, Minnesota has a very strong basis in the arts: The city hosts a dozen large art, cultural, science, and historical museums alongside smaller galleries and museums, four large ballet, dance, and folkdance companies, as well as filmmakers groups and numerous theater companies. The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, founded in the late 1890s and early 1900s, is located near the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD)in south central Minneapolis. Already the largest art museum in the city, the institute completed a second major expansion in 2006. The outdoor Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is located near downtown and across the street from the center. Music and theater are also big in the city: Concerts at stadiums and theaters in the Minneapolis area continue to draw the world's finest musicians. The MacPhail Center for Music, founded in 1907, built new facilities near the Mississippi riverfront in 2006. The Minneapolis region is second only to New York City in live theater per capita and is the third-largest theater market in the U.S., supporting the Jungle, Mixed Blood and Penumbra theaters, the Brave New Workshop, Theater Latté Da and the Children's Theatre Company. A home to poetry readings in live music venues, Minneapolis has also developed a vibrant spoken word community.

In sports, Minneapolis has 4 different professional teams to watch: While the Minnesota Lynx (Women's team) and the Minnesota Timberwolves (Men's team) are on the basketball court at Target Center, the Minnesota Twins play baseball in the Metrodome, and the Minnesota Vikings are on the football fields. For personal recreation, the Minneapolis park system has been called the best-designed, best-financed and best-maintained in America. The city's Chain of Lakes is connected by bike, running, and walking paths and used for swimming, fishing, picnics, boating, and ice skating. A parkway for cars, a bikeway for riders, and a walkway for pedestrians run parallel paths along the 52 mile route of the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway. Runner's World ranks Minneapolis America's sixth best city for runners. The Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis and St. Paul draws 250,000 spectators every October. Five golf courses are located within the city, with nationally renowned Hazeltine National Golf Club, Bearpath Country Club, and Bunker Hills Golf Course in nearby suburbs.
